My transmission was a bit noisy before and it's much quieter now. I bought my car used and the transmission started getting noisy. Took it to my mechanic and he checked the fluid and said it had gear oil not transmission fluid. He flushed it using Honda MT fluid and told me that Honda's need to use Honda fluid. He recommended for me to drive the car for a few hundred miles and flush it again to help get the rest of the dirty gear oil out so I bought some here on Amazon and just that. Glad I did cause this time around it made a difference. I'm going to change flush it every 30k from now on.It is a civic lx with the 1.7L engine and manual transmission. I have driven about 50,000 miles and decided to change the transmission oil after the axle broke. The fluid that came out of the transmission was just as clear, and clean as the fluid that went in after 4 years. Manual fluid changes are so infrequent and this unit probably only takes like 2 quarts. I would just tell him to save up for the real juice, either some Honda, Amsoil, or Redline MTF. It will shift much better and the synchros will last longer.</p><p> I can recommend fluid changes for preventative maintenance until I'm blue in the face with these folks, and they put it off until it is way too late, and then a fluid change is a band-aid at best. Tell him to save for a rebuild. Doesn't sound like a fluid change is going to help much at this point. Come to think of it, it sounds like his clutch might be dragging or not fully releasing if he is having trouble to get into 1st gear. Might look into that first. Those manual transmissions are supposed to have their fluid changed every 90k miles under normal conditions and 30k under severe (for reference). Either way, if you spend on fluid get a real MTF like Honda Genuine, Amsoil, Red Line, etc.depending on the year HG Type II or the offering from the 90s fluid would still be better than motor oil, 100% no doubt about it. Using Amsoil right now and I'm pleased, 1992 S20 transmission in this little thing. 2 quarts total capacity, 1.9 quart refill. I just dumped in the entire bottle after draining the used fluid, and the used; after being transferred from the catch pan, filled up the now empty Amsoil MTF bottles(2, 1 quart bottles) I had just poured into the tranny all the way up. PS: Definitely key to note motor oil is the 'temporary' replacement, as in only for a little while etc. I know older hondas called for regular motor oil. Motor oil was specified back before the advent of OBD-II. The mandated emissions-restrictions that came with OBD-II resulted in the reduction of zinc and phosphorus in motor oil. Designed to improve volumetric efficiency, it uses two camshaft profiles and hydraulically selects between the profiles. Brian wasn’t a fan of the EP3 platform. The design was too big for him, the K-series was too new and cramped in the engine compartment, and the USDM bumpers were completely distasteful to him. However, Howley has been known to enjoy challenges. From day one, he knew he wanted to take an unpopular platform and modify it into something unique. “To get a compliment on an EP3 build brings total joy to me and the challenge I set forth for myself,” said Howley. Brian never intended on pursuing much higher power than the factory numbers, but after getting a taste of a 270whp car, he decided he wants to put this number to shame and reach for maximum power. To support the power increase, Brian installed a custom-built, one-piece, blue half cage.He stiffened up the chassis to minimize body roll with a rear sway bar, c-pillar bar, tie bar, and control arms, as well as lowered the car by two-inches. Although the stock transmission remained in place, he replaced the clutch with a six-puck clutch. To maximize traction, Brian equipped the RAYS wheels on his Civic with Toyo R888R tires.</p><p> Finally, he upgraded the entire brake system with bigger rotors, calipers, performance pads, and stainless steel braided lines. The car was finally ready to be pushed to its full potential, but before doing so, the exterior needed some creativity. Making the body unique wasn’t an easy task for Brian. Modifying the exterior of the EP3 isn’t quite as popular as some of the other Civic platforms. He decided to part ways with the bumpers that were an eye-sore to him. In their place, he put Type R bumpers complemented with a Walker Japan front lip and a Type R Spec rear diffuser. After modifying the body with molded front-over fenders and flared rear quarter panels, he painted the body in a vivid blue pearl color. Finally, the car started looking as good as it performed. The countless hours spent in the garage working on the car were all worth it, because they were spent with his wife and two children, Dominic and Connor. On the other hand, the project did present some normal obstacles. “A little hit and run accident right after completing the rear Type R conversion was about the worst of it, but fortunately it was just some minor paint damage which was easily repaired,” Howley explained. Brian fixed the car and moved on to win numerous awards at various car shows, a goal he had set from the start. He has managed to take a small engine compartment, and make it look clean with a fully tucked wiring and nothing but the best parts. My wife has a 2001 Civic EX, which is basically bomb proof. I'd like something with a manual transmission that's a little more fun to drive than her car. I like the look of the EP3 Civic, but to my knowledge there weren't a ton of them in the US. Does this make it hard to find parts or expensive to fix. I love my ep3, if that helps. Mine is my daily driver, but also a project car. I source all the parts myself and then have a shop install them. General maintenance stuff like oil changes and spark plugs are no different than any other car, and even cheaper if you DIY. The ep3 transmission is temperamental, and grinds sometimes when shifting into 2nd or 3rd at high rpm with the clutch pedal fully depressed. It's a common issue, so just make sure to change the tranny fluid every year. I generally order performance parts from kseriesparts.com and tires from TireRack, but look around as deals can be had everywhere. I had my '02 Si for just shy of 10 years and it was bulletproof and a great utility vehicle with the hatchback. Other than regular maintenance, the only things that needed replacing during the time I owned mine were the two rear wheel bearings and that didn't cost much at all (what I would expect to pay on a regular Civic). Some people did have problems with the transmission arising from the sychros being worn too quickly, most commonly for the 2-3 shift point, and even if it was really bad, you can still shift the car if you're careful enough and double clutching. If you want it fixed, then a transmission rebuild is definitely recommended. My advice would be to find one that is as unmodified as possible. A car that shows signs of being modified would usually have been driven harder more often, which would lead to the chances of repairs and replacements being greater.</p><p>I live in a good size city (Portland, OR), and I've only seen an EP3 Civic in person twice in the last year, they were both silver, and in the same area, so it could have been the same thing for all I know. I maybe see one of them go up on craigslist every few weeks or cars.com every 3-4 months or so. Here's the first I've seen in a while, and this one is completely un-modded from the looks, another thing that's beginning to be a rarity with these things. They also seem to raising in price, somewhat. So it could be a decent investment, who knows. Good luck with the search!, just remember, check craigslist and cars.com everyday to find a good one. The oil filter is really hard to get at; you have to take the wheel off and even then, its not easy to get a good grip on it. Just FYI, otherwise its a blast to own.
